God is Greater

“Give us this day our daily bread.”(Matt. 6:11)
A family devotional to help get the spiritual food we need!

Read: 1 John 5:9-12 - If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Thought: When we are confused about who is telling the truth of the matter, always go back to scripture.  Let the Bible be your guide to truth and let the witness of God always reign in your life.

Questions:
1.       What witness has God given to us?
2.      If you don’t believe, what do you make God?
3.      What has God given us that is in His Son?
4.      What happens if you don’t have the Son?
Exercise:
Read the story online at: http://www.ecclesia.org/truth/son.html

Prayer: Pray that we accept the testimony and witness of God so that we can obtain that eternal life!

Answers: 1. His Son (v.9)                  2. A Liar (v.10)                   3. Eternal life (v.11)          4. You don’t have life (v.12)

Love Overcomes

Read: 1 John 4:17-19 - Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love Him because He first loved us.
Thought: This is such a simple concept, but love overcomes everything.  When you truly love, you know God and can abide in Him.  You will be obedient to His will because of love.  You will treat other as they should be treated because you love.  Love is the central hub of everything.

Questions:
1.       If we love, we know we abide in Jesus Christ and may have ________ in the day of judgment.
2.      There is fear in love.  T or F
3.      Fear involves what? ____________
4.      If you fear God, have you truly known the love of God?
5.      Why do you we love God?

Exercise: Make an acrostic for how you can be “BOLD” in this world.

Your Slice of Bread for Thursday 9-10-15

“Give us this day our daily bread.”(Matt. 6:11)
A family devotional to help get the spiritual food we need!
Love In Action
Read: 1 John 3:16-18 – By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
Thought: We can know God by the action that was taken.  I know God loves me because He gave His Son for me!  Actions speak louder than works.  Actions reinforce words spoken.  Our actions will tell if we really love our brethren or not. What do your actions say?

Questions:
1.      How did Christ show us love?
2.      How do we lay our lives down for the brethren? (See v.17)
3.      If we shut up our hearts, what are we not doing for our brethren?
4.      How should we love one another?  In _________  &  ___________ (v.18)

Exercise: “Action”
Everyone must pick 1 specific way to show love to others.  Each person must act out what they came up with & everyone else must guess.  (It is like playing charades)  You cannot talk, only act.  Good luck.

Prayer: Pray that we show an active love and not just talk a good game.

Wednesday's Slice of Bread

“Give us this day our daily bread.”(Matt. 6:11)
A family devotional to help get the spiritual food we need!

Contrasts

1 John 3:10-15 - In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.  For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother.  And why did he murder him?  Because his works were evil and his brother's righteous.  Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.  We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death.  Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

Thought:If you wanted to summarize the Bible in one word, what would it be?  John uses the word love over and over again to tell us what God is all about.  Love is the root of everything.

Questions: There are 6 contrasts in this passage.  Fill in the blanks with the correct word(s).
1.      Children of God v. _____________________
2.      Love v. _______________
3.      Cain’s works evil  v. Abel’s works ______________
4.      Death v. _____________
5.      Love v. _____________
6.      Murderer v. __________________
(Answers: Children of the devil, wicked, righteous, life, death, eternal life)

Exercise: Contrasts (1 person reads & everyone else gives the answer. Answers are bolded)
Light v.  Dark                                    Tall – short                 Heavy – light              Pretty – ugly                              Jumbo – Shrimp                     Love – Hate                God – devil                 Randy Daw - ____?____

Prayer: Pray that we are made manifest  to the world around us, by the way we live our lives.

Your Slice of Bread for Friday

“Give us this day our daily bread.”(Matt. 6:11)
A family devotional to help get the spiritual food we need!

Children of God

Read: 1 John 2:28-29 - And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.  If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him."

Thought: Have you ever wondered why you may worry or have fear?  I believe many times it is because of lack of confidence.  Confidence plays a huge part in what we think and do.  Let God give you the confidence you need.

Questions:
1.      How do you have confidence?
2.      John contrasts confidence with _________________.
3.      In verse 29 you can know people are from Him if they practice what?

Answers:
1. (Abiding in Him)
2. (Ashamed)
3.  (Righteousness)

Prayer: Pray that you will look like the righteousness of God and that others will be brought to Christ through you.
